Class Dictionary

Empirically - derived from or relating to experiment and observation rather than theory
There was a time when people thought the earth was flat because they had no one to prove that it wasn't, but now we have seen or proven with empirical evidence that it is round.

Adjustment - adaptation or change
We should always keep doing the necessary adjustments to have a better life.

Illusion - imagination
He has the illusion that he is really clever.

Complementary - the things are different from each other but make a good combination
To improve the quality of life through work, two complementary strategies are needed.

Brief - lasting or taking only a short time
I am going to tell you a brief idea about my research paper.

Expenses - costs, payment you owe
The company is trying to reduce their expenses by firing some employees.

Justice - fair
People don't like to be in a country if it does not have justice and fairness.

Abuse - inhumane treatment
The child showed signs of abuse.

Hide - to seek protection or evade responsibility
I want to hid from everyone, especially you when I know the work is due.

Donor - person who gives something, especially money or time to a fund or charity
An anonymous donor has given $20.

Concise - expressing much clearly in few words
I wrote a concise essay about my kids.

Blister - a small bubble-like elevation on the skin, filled with serum, produced as a reaction to a burn or mechanical reaction
I have two blisters on my feet because of my new shoes.

Accurate - exact, specific
Can you give me the accurate location?

Enhance - make better or more attractive
Teachers use some tools to enhance students' understanding.

Connoisseur - explorer or test exact thing like wine or beer, able to tell if it is good or not
Every wine company needs a connoisseur to prove the wines.

Further - a greater distance
I'm tired to go further.

Boundary - limits
The boundaries or my land are 500 feet wide and 700 feet long.

Devote - give entirely to a specific person, activity or cause
I devoted my time to study.

Meager - something really weak
Every morning he eats a meager breakfast of toast and coffee.

Foster - encourage or promote the development of something good
The teacher's task is to foster learning.

Isolate - to place apart; cause to be alone
He is isolated from the rest of the world.

Enhance - to raise to high degree, to increase something to make it more effective
To enhance our health we should exercise every morning.

Subordinate - to make less important
The grammar of this essay is subordinate of the main idea.

Revise - to change or to correct something, or to review
When the teacher found errors in student's paragraphs, they have to revise these errors.

Recommendations - a suggestion or proposal as to the best course of action
He selected his staff by personal recommendation.

Faithful - some one who is faithful to a person, organization, idea or activity, remaining firm in their belief in them or their support for them.
She had been faithful to her promise to guard this secret.

Constitution - rule, law
Every country has a different constitution.

Pick up - an act of collecting a person or goods, especially in vehicle
You can travel by coach from your local pickup point to your hotel.

Reassessment - a new appraisal or evaluation
Sometimes the teacher reassesses the student's paper.

Browse - to look through something, glance, scan, check over
She is browsing the shelves for something to read

Territory - Style of earth in a specific place or region
The territory of my hometown is so different than Michigan's territory.

Employee - A person who works for another person or for a company for wages or salary
A good boss listens to his employees.

Chop - cut something into small pieces with repeated sharp blows using an ax or knife
They chopped up the log for firewood.

Amusement - the feeling that you have when you think something is funny
He is responsible for the amusing activity.

Constantly - continuing without pause, all the time
Language never stays the same for long; it is constantly changing.

Elasticity- the ability of something to change, flexibility
Elasticity and the ability to quickly solve problems is necessary.

Nutrients - valuable substances
Juicing helps you get all of the nutrients from the fruits.

Emission-
Chemical factory emissions cause global warming.

Rely - put trust in something.
I just want you to rely on me when I say I will be in class on time.

Marvelous - excellent or great
The weather was simply marvelous.

Manipulate - to handle, control or move something

Ability - skill to do something
The manager had lost his ability to motivate the players.

Campaign - an organized course of action to achieve a particular goal
All presidents have political campaigns.

Unconscious - lacking awareness and the capacity for sensory perception; not conscious
When a person is in a coma, they are deeply unconscious and don't respond to anything going on around them.

Implement - something used to achieve a purpose

Restrain - to control the actions or behaviors of someone by force
She was so angry that she could hardly restrain herself.

Evaluation - the making of a judgement about the amount, number or value of something

Annual - yearly, per every year
I have an annual trip to go back to my home country.

Intense - strong, powerful
Our love is intense

Drudgery - work hard
I see that the life needs to be drudgery

Retain - to keep facts in your memory
I retain new knowledge if I can immediately put it to use.

Socialize - trying to make friends with some people
I like to socialize with new people.

Ascribe - attribute to or credit to

Pointedly - in such a manner as to make something clearly evident

Atheist - someone who denies the existence of god

Judge - a public officer appointed to decided cases in a law court
He is due to appear before a judge and jury on Monday.

Illuminate - to throw light in or onto; to make easily understood, clarify; to become lighted up
Words could illuminate your understanding of life.

Nurtured - care for and encourage the growth or development of; antonyms are abandon and ignore
I felt nurtured through the words of authors who wrote in the context of their communities.

Refine - to make something pure or to improve an idea
Engineers spent many months refining the software.
My teacher asked me to refine my research paper.

Entrepreneur - a person who organizes and manages any new enterprise or venture.
I would like to be an entrepreneur in my father's business and take it to new levels of growth.

Tragedy - the unfortunate aspect of something
The hurricane was a tragedy, but in time it got better.

Hamper - hinder, obstruct
The runner was hampered by a thigh injury in the run-up to the race.

Capricious - unpredictable
The climate of Kalamazoo is capricious.

Beloved - very popular with a specific set of people

Aggressive -ready or likely to attack or confront

Conviction
1. a formal declaration that someone is guilty of a criminal offense, made by the verdict of jury or the decision of a judge.
She had a previous conviction for a similar offense.
2. a firmly held belief or opinion.
His conviction that the death was no accident.

Distinct -clear
The main idea should be distinct in the article.

Narratively -through story
Children like to learn narratively

Pseudoscience -a set of statements and assertions that appear scientific but are not based on empirical evidence or scientific method.
I hate pseudoscience because it is not scientifically proven.

Meaningfulness -having a serious, important or useful quality or purpose

Bereft -lonely and abandoned, especially through someone's death or departure

Justification -good reason for something that exists or has been done

Accumulate -to gather or collect, often in gradual degrees
The accumulation of water has caused a puddle in the driveway.

Achieve -to succeed in finishing something

Labor -to try very hard

Diverse -different kinds
